When Google Search results are new and possibly unreliable, a notification appears

When Google detects that its search results aren’t of the highest quality, it issues a warning.

Google is experimenting with a new search function. That alerts users when the results for their query are fresh and hence potentially untrustworthy. The notification reads as follows:

These results appear to be changing rapidly. If this is a new topic, it may take some time for trustworthy sources to add results.

When Vox first reported this, Google’s Danny Sullivan said, “When somebody conducts a search on Google, we’re trying to provide you the most relevant, accurate information we can, but we get a lot of things that are wholly new.” In instances like this, Google needs time to generate trustworthy search results, and additional sites are unlikely to have written such content.

What it looks like.

Similar features previously released.

In April 2020, Google introduced a function that alerts users when their search results aren’t up to par. Both features have the same main goal: to indicate that Google Search may not offer the best results for that specific question, and that Google is aware of this and that you should be as well.

More details.

“Someone had a video of a police report released in Wales, and it gained a little bit of news attention. Sullivan told Vox, “But there’s still not a lot about it. However, we can tell it’s starting to trend because people are presumably looking for it and maybe sharing it on social media. Also, we can tell that there isn’t a lot of necessarily good stuff out there [for search]. We also believe that additional material will become available.”

In summary, the warning implies that the current index lacks what Google considers reliable content on a search topic and that when additional information becomes available, the results will improve.

Why we care.

The in-SERP notice shows that Google is aware of situations in which it may not be able to provide the best search results. This notice is also useful for searchers who are looking for newer sensitive issues. This notice could be used by Google to prevent people from visiting spammy, clickbait, or fraudulent information websites.

The fact that the search engine is aware of these situations is noteworthy. It just goes to show how clever a search engine can be, and when the search fails, we notice it immediately.
